MACON – The College of Coastal Georgia Mariners defeated the Middle Georgia Knights in their home opener in three sets. The Mariners won the first set 25-13, the second 25-11, and the third 25-18.
The Mariners dominated the Knights all night, Coastal Georgia’s efficient offense and tough serving kept Middle Georgia off balance. The Mariners recorded 48 kills in the three-set match while the Knights only managed 19. Coastal Georgia added eight aces, two each coming from Larregui Lopez, Muldrow, Jillian Lui, and Fabiola Colon. In addition, the Mariners serve receive was spotless tonight allowing no aces.
Freshman Lui got an opportunity to swing outside and playback row during tonight’s match. She recorded three kills on nine attempts and added five digs to aid in the Mariner victory.
In the first set, the Mariners record 17 kills and made five hitting errors. In addition to their two aces, they also tallied a block and gave up no serving errors. They passed for 2.67 and earned the side out 76.9 percent of the time. Terwilliger had a phenomenal first set, hitting 1.000 with four kills on four attempts.
In the second set, the Mariners tallied 19 kills and only allowed Middle Georgia to earn four. In the entire set, the team only made one hitting error and recorded three aces. Muldrow added a block to carry the Mariners to a 25-11 lead.
The third set was much closer in score and stats. Coastal Georgia earned 13 kills but gave up eight. The Mariners also totaled four hitting errors. With their three aces, the Mariners were able to surpass the Knights 25-18.
