BRUNSWICK, Ga. – The College of Coastal Georgia Mariners (7-5, 5-4) continue to creep up the Sun Conference standings with a 74-72 win over the Webber International Warriors (7-13, 3-7).
Coastal Georgia and Webber International traded points in the first five minutes of play before the Mariners took a solid lead. By the 12:32 mark, the Mariners had a seven-point lead after going on an eight-point run and holding Webber scoreless for over two minutes.
With five minutes remaining in the first half, the Warriors had closed their gap from 12 points down to five. As time fell off the clock both teams maintained their position and the first half finished 35-33 on behalf of the Mariners.
Green was the leading scorer for the Mariners at the half. He totaled 10 points, shooting 3-3 from the field, 2-2 from behind the arc, and 2-2 at the line. Brown contributed five points and Oliphant and Parks each added six points.
Through the beginning of the second half, the Mariners and the Warriors maintained and Coastal Georgia kept up a one or two-possession lead. While the game fluctuated a little, the Warriors always kept within 10 points of the Mariners.
Toward the end of the half, the Warriors crept closer, closing the gap to five with 1:19 seconds remaining. They continued to decrease the Mariner lead and with 5.5 seconds left Webber International came within one point. Parks pushed the Mariner lead back to two points with a made free throw. The Warriors were not able to make a full-court basket in the time remaining and Coastal Georgia was victorious 74-72.
Lee Green put up career-high numbers against the Warriors. He scored 16 points, shooting 5-6 from the field, 2-4 from behind the arc, and 4-4 at the line.
Jordon Parks was the leading scorer for the Mariners. He totaled 22 points, shooting 9-12 from the field, 2-4 from behind the arc, and 2-4 from the foul line.
Elijah Goodman and Vidmantas Kaciuska each finished with a team-high six rebounds. Following close behind were Anthony Duncan and Parks who each had five rebounds of their own. Green finished with four.
As a team, the Mariners shot 49.1 percent from the field, 35 percent from behind the arc, and 56.5 percent from the free-throw line. They bested the Warriors in both field goal and three-point shooting percentage. Coastal Georgia also finished with 33 rebounds, four blocks, eight steals, and six assists.
The Mariners will face Warner University on Tuesday, Jan. 19 at 7:30 p.m. on the road.
